Laser Tag Crossover — Idea Parking

Status: PROPOSED — NOT IMPLEMENTED. Idea parking, started 2026-08-28. Owner: delan

Nothing here is scheduled. This document exists so crossover ideas land somewhere that survives the conversation instead of being lost or derailing the slice. Post-slice, post-launch territory — see the Slice Contract in docs/official/todo-inventory.md. Add to it freely; nothing leaves it without a backlog row or a bible ruling.

The video game is not designed from this file. The venue might never exist. Game-format forks live in docs/proposals/format-forks.md. If two game ideas are equal and one would also play on a pack, that may sway a later pick. It does not pick the genre.

The premise

An EchoSpire-themed laser tag experience sharing the game's world, Houses, and content systems. The connective tissue is the generated-content engine: the same spine/lens quest generation that powers the video game's dynamic quests can hand a laser tag arena unending, unrepeatable battles.

Parked ideas

Quest cards in the briefing room (2026-08-28)

The video game's quest-card concept (the run modifier drawn at start — see the Slice Contract, where the in-game version is scoped) applied to a laser tag session:

  • Players gather in the briefing room before a match.
  • A randomizer graphic on the briefing screen flips through a deck of quest cards — visibly shuffling through possibilities — and lands on the card that is actually live for this match.
  • The landed card sets the match's modifier/objective: the session-wide rule everyone plays under.

The theatrical flip-and-land does real work: it makes the randomness witnessed (players saw it land, so the modifier feels fair and fated rather than arbitrary), and it turns the briefing room into part of the game instead of a queue. As far as we know, no laser tag operation is doing this — briefings are static rule readings everywhere.

Fiction fit is the same as in-game: the briefing is what you think the mission is; the draw is what the rift actually holds. Echo-nature makes every deployment unpredictable.

Two-view generated matches (2026-08-28, from the deferred backlog)

The PvP-historiography idea applied physically: the generator creates a floor event; the two teams are briefed with opposing lenses on it — different goals, different framing of the same scenario — and the winning team's version becomes the record in the shared world/lore continuity. Requires the spine schema and the read-only-spine rule (bible session items). Repeat customers accumulate a history the venue can show them.

Constraints that carry over from the game

  • Generated content reads the spine, never writes it. Arena matches can render lenses on canonical events; only the author adds floor events. A match outcome writing into the record stratum is the sanctioned exception — that is the point of the two-view mode.
  • House identity follows the bible. Valerii/Axiom/Syndicate/Censors briefing voices come from story/bible/voices/. Salvari stay hidden — which suggests something: a Salvari mission is the one the briefing screen doesn't announce.
  • Anti-AI-tells checklist applies to any generated briefing copy a customer hears.

The map is the record; the arena is the floor

The posted arena map — briefing room, lobby, the laminated card on the wall — is subtly wrong on purpose. A corridor exists that the map doesn't show. A room the map labels "SEALED — RECALIBRATION" is open. Regulars learn the truth of the space the way players of the video game learn the truth of the world: by noticing where the record and the territory disagree. The unmapped corridor is, of course, how you find the Salvari mission. Practicality: costs a graphic designer an afternoon. The thesis as level design, nearly free.

Class mechanics as vest firmware

Modern tag systems (Laserforce, Zone, Helios) support custom game logic per pack. The five class verbs map almost embarrassingly well:

  • Anchor / Density — standing your ground builds armor: each second stationary in a contested zone adds a hit point, capped; move and you slowly shed it. Grav-Lock: at max armor your pack chirps and your trigger slows.
  • Drifter / Echo-Lock — tag the same opponent five times and the fifth is an execute: triple points and their pack does a full reboot cycle instead of a standard respawn.
  • Conduit / Overload — hold the trigger for a charged shot that scores double, and your own pack goes vulnerable for the next ten seconds. The debt is real and everyone near you can hear it whining.
  • Machinist / Constructs — carry up to two deployable pucks that auto-tag enemies in range until shot out. You are choosing between firepower in your hand and firepower on the floor.
  • Catalyst / Mutate — your pack rerolls its own rules at intervals; the gamble class for the player who thinks the other four are too predictable.

Practicality: real venues run custom formats on these systems today; this is configuration plus firmware scripting, not new hardware. Start with two classes — same slice discipline as the game.

Death leaves an echo — on the floor

When a player is tagged out, the nearest floor/wall LED node lights up as their echo: a cold glow holding their House color and score value. Touch an echo to salvage it — points, or a few seconds of shield. Echoes persist across the match; a heavy firefight leaves a corridor littered with ghosts, and the arena's light literally becomes a map of where the match went wrong. Wilder tier: echoes persist across sessions, so Friday's birthday party walks past the still-glowing residue of Thursday league night. Practicality: addressable LED nodes are commodity hardware; the tag system already knows where and when everyone died.

The debrief lies

End of match, the big screen plays the official record: a sanitized, triumphant recap in the winning team's voice — stirring music, selective stats, the losing team's best play absent. Then every player's phone or kiosk log shows their account: what they actually did, every tag, unedited. The gap between the two screens is the entire game's thesis, delivered to a twelve-year-old in fifteen seconds. Season tier: the lobby's monument wall records only official versions of league history — while a clipboard in the maintenance corridor, findable by anyone who looks, holds the true logs of every match ever played. Practicality: pure software and signage. The clipboard costs eleven dollars.

The Censors' correction

Mid-match, the loudspeaker announces a revision: "The record has been corrected. The objective was always the east vault." It contradicts the briefing everyone heard. The printed quest card from the randomizer — still in the team captain's pocket — says otherwise. Teams that trust their work order over the loudspeaker and complete the original objective earn the bonus. The lesson is the game's second pillar, taught by betrayal: the humble record outranks the official announcement. Practicality: one scripted audio event and a scoring rule. Use sparingly — once a night, not once a match, or it becomes noise instead of a story people tell in the car home.

The printed quest card is a cross-media key

The randomizer lands, and the machine prints the card — match seed, modifier, date, House crest. It's a keepsake, and the code on it unlocks the same quest-card modifier in the video game, seeded identically. Your laser tag match becomes a run you can attempt again at home, alone, in card form; your game deaths can surface as named echo-records in the arena. One spine, two bodies. Practicality: receipt-printer hardware plus the account linking the game already has. Depends on the quest-card pool existing in the game first — correctly sequenced behind the slice.

The safety briefing is the orientation

First visit: the safety briefing is the propaganda orientation — sincere, official, beautifully produced, the same sim as the game's opening. On a repeat visitor's Nth visit, the briefing glitches — a half-second of the wrong corridor, one syllable clipped: "tru—." Nobody on staff acknowledges it. The venue's tutorial is the game's tutorial, and it decays for exactly the people paying enough attention to deserve it. Practicality: two or three pre-rendered briefing variants and a visit counter on the membership account.

Alden is on staff

Never seen, never named on the schedule. A janitor's cart that has always just been somewhere. Hand-signed work orders as props near the queue. Between matches, a maintenance voice on the PA that never promises anything and talks about the equipment the way other people talk about people. Regulars who ask the right question at the desk get a chore list instead of an answer — and the chore list is the Salvari door. Practicality: props, a voice actor for an hour, and staff who can keep a straight face. The cheapest idea here, and possibly the one people would drive furthest for.

Last week's official record is this week's rule (2026-08-30)

League night files an official account of the match (winner's House voice, sanitized stats — same muscle as "the debrief lies"). The next public session plays under that filing as a modifier: extra walls that were never there, an objective the losers "never reached," a respawn the record says was fair. Regulars who kept their printed work order from last week can spend it once to correct a single rule — the humble record vs the monument.

This does not require the video game to be "runs write the next lie." It is the same thesis as a house rule. If the video game later files runs, the two can share a spine. Either can exist alone. Practicality: a text modifier on the briefing screen plus a shoebox of last week's printouts. Software for the league; cardboard for the birthday party.

Two House mutators is a tear (2026-08-30)

The randomizer is allowed to land two House modifiers. Locally each is fine. Together the arena misbehaves: lights desync, extra echoes on the floor, packs whine, a third objective appears that nobody briefed. Staff copy: the core did not fail. It obeyed. Use this rarely — a Saturday closer, not the 4pm kids' round — or it becomes fog rather than a story. Practicality: two flags in the format script. The "tear" is lighting + one spawn rule, not a new game mode.

Outcasting as the late playlist (2026-08-30)

A Valerii-voiced night ends with a public send-off: the bottom team is outcast from the wall playlist into a harder, darker match (or into a Salvari chore-list pickup if they find the unmapped corridor). IV's rite as a queue. Do not do this to walk-in kids; this is league and consenting regulars. Practicality: two playlists and a speech. The cruelty is the fiction; the safety is the door is optional.

Barter window (2026-08-30)

One night the prize desk does not take money. It takes match salvage — tokens, printed cards, echo-salvage points. The Syndicate night next door is still a cash register. People will notice which window they prefer, which is the whole Salvari joke. Practicality: a second SKU that costs 0 dollars and 1 token. One staffer who can say "we don't take coin" with a straight face.

The Living Arena session (2026-08-30, Scott + Claude)

Scott's brief: for any of this vision to work, the arena must become the Spire — a Living Arena. The Realms that attach are god-sent for the format. Think as out-there as possible, then ground it — staged realities are fine. Grounding evidence for every number below lives in laser-tag-feasibility-research.md (8-track research pass, Aug 2026 — spot-check anchors before they reach a bank).

The spine (2026-08-30, Claude — proposed, unruled)

Every laser tag venue on earth treats the scoreboard as infallible. EchoSpire is the one where the scoreboard lies — and you can prove it. Every player has walked off a floor muttering "I hit him three times, that thing's broken," and every venue answers "the system doesn't lie." Ours answers: you're right. It does. Here's the maintenance log. One move delivers a mechanic, a marketing hook, and Pillar 1 to a twelve-year-old in fifteen seconds, with zero lore required.

The two-layer rule (2026-08-30, Claude — proposed constraint on every idea in this file)

Layer 1 must be a good laser tag mechanic with zero lore. Layer 2 is what it means if you know the world. Never ship anything that only works at Layer 2. (Echoes on the floor: L1 = grab the glow for points, deny it to enemies; L2 = every death leaves an echo. The debrief lies: L1 = hype recap vs your real stats, instantly funny; L2 = the entire thesis.) This is the answer to "someone shouldn't have to have played the game to enjoy the laser tag."

Import the structure, not the melancholy (2026-08-30)

EchoSpire is grief and novel-prose; laser tag is loud children on a Saturday. Do not import the sadness — import the structure (official record vs true record) and the look (industrial cathedral, violet-in gold-out). Let the melancholy be something regulars find. Three visitor tiers mirror the game's own arc: walk-in (Layer 1 only, complete and satisfying), regular/league (the briefing glitches on visit N; last week's official record is this week's rule), initiate (the unmapped corridor, the chore list, Alden). Orientation → campaign → Salvari reveal, in physical space, across visits.

You don't win the match — you win the pen (2026-08-30, Claude)

The team holding the objective at match end doesn't just score more: they author the record. The big board visibly edits the losers' numbers; the losers' printed slips still show the truth. Converts "who scored more" into "who gets to say what happened" — the game's actual subject — legible in four seconds to a stranger. Practicality: pure software on the canonical projection. Free.

The repair path — scoring without shooting (2026-08-30, Claude)

Floor nodes fail during matches. A player who stops to fix one scores — quietly, on the humble ledger, not the big board. It is the Salvari as mechanic, it is how the chore list finds you, and it gives the kid who's bad at laser tag a real role — a commercial argument, not just a thematic one; every group has that kid. Practicality: a hold-to-repair button on nodes that already exist. Near-free.

The lore is the budget (2026-08-30 — the load-bearing insight)

Disney's fiction promises seamlessness, which costs a billion dollars. EchoSpire's fiction promises seams: realms half-materialize, records disagree with territory, the Bleed makes reality unreliable. Therefore an unfinished set is canon, a desynced node is a tear, a glitching pack is the Bleed, and light-and-fog re-theming instead of physical construction is how attached realms would actually look. The VOID proved the technique (plain plywood corridors + fans, mist, heat = many worlds) and proved the anti-lesson (heavy capex dies) in the same lifetime. We are the only fiction where imperfection is on-theme. Budget accordingly and never apologize for a seam — narrate it.

The seed is the realm (2026-08-30)

Scott asked whether tech exists to create new realms each run. Yes — but the realm is a seed, not a wall. The game already generates realms deterministically from a seed; the arena version is the same object: one seed → node behaviors, lighting states, objective placement, event timing, PA script. Physical layout static; behavior-space effectively infinite; no two matches ever the same. Bonus: seeded matches are also the championship mechanism (see below) and the cross-media key already parked above. Practicality: the run-generation architecture the game already has, replayed on arena nodes. Software only.

Moving walls — the safety line, and what moves instead (2026-08-30)

The hard rule from theater and haunt practice: move light, air, sound, and images freely; move mass only if it is (a) behind barriers, (b) overhead with real rigging, (c) soft and low-pressure, or (d) pushed by staff at walking pace. Powered rigid scenery near guests in the dark is five-figure-per-axis engineered rigging territory (Creative Conners class) and reclassifies the venue. The staged kit instead:

  • Periaktoi — three-sided rotating columns, ~$100–200 DIY, one 120° turn per turnover = three realms per column. Ancient Greek tech, still the best.
  • Scrim reveals — front-lit it's an opaque "official" Spire wall; kill the front light, light behind it, and it becomes a window into the maintenance corridor that "wasn't there." The pillar as a $300 lighting trick, zero moving parts. Also the answer to laser-tag-escape-rooms during play: corridors appear via light + maglock release, not motors.
  • Kabuki drops, maglock flip-panels ($30–150) for mid-session reveals.
  • One inflatable "breathing wall" (~$1,500, haunt squeeze-tunnel hardware) — the only scenery allowed to press against players, because it fails limp. The Spire visibly breathes.
  • Projection re-theming — used 4–6k-lumen projectors ($150–600 each) + HeavyM ($199): the realm-map biome matrix (Submerged Archive, Sunblasted Ruin, Machine Sanctuary…) already specifies palette/fog/beacon per biome; those briefs are the arena's lighting cue sheets, written before we knew we'd need them.

Practicality: full transformation layer $4–8k on top of the road-case kit; every element packs into cases. Fire code is the real constraint — sprinklered venues only, FR-rated fabrics with certificates in the road case, fail-safe maglocks. See research file, NFPA 101 notes.

The echo imprint, three ways (2026-08-30 — Scott's 3D imprint, grounded)

  • Staged (~$550–1,150/zone): ceiling Pi + camera keeps a 2-second ring buffer; the tag packet's timestamp pulls the exact frame of the fall; background-subtract, tint House color, project the player's actual collapse pose glowing on the floor where they dropped, inside 1 second. The trick is clock discipline, not AI — the distributed-systems part is the hard part and it isn't hard for us. Overlapping bodies in a pileup merge into one blob: canon — a corrupted echo.
  • Cheap ($80, possibly the best idea of the session): the Scorch Wall — a photoluminescent panel + a strobe fired by the tag event. The player's actual shadow freezes on the wall in their dying pose, then fades over minutes, exactly like a memory the Spire is losing. Zero compute, zero latency, genuinely eerie, and it is the design pillar in physical form: the humble trace outlasting the record.
  • The keepsake: a $175 receipt printer prints the dithered death-silhouette on a "MAINTENANCE LOG — INCIDENT REPORT" card at the exit. Thermal prints fade in months — which is the lore ("logs degrade"), and the durable reprint is a paid upsell.

Practicality: cameras + minors means RAM-only ring buffers, mask-only storage, signage, and a biometric-law check. Volumetric/skeleton capture is $16k+ and slower — researched, rejected; the silhouette IS the pose.

Briefing as transit (2026-08-30 — Scott's motion ride, grounded)

Star Tours cost $32M in 1987. Disney World's stretching room doesn't move — only the ceiling does. Rise of the Resistance's "flight" is a turntable and two doors. The pattern, at haunt prices (~$4.5–6k): a floating plywood deck on rubber isolators with bass shakers is the motion base; three TVs behind scenic frames are the windows; board through the aft door, blackout beat, and exit the forward door into a realm that didn't exist when you boarded. The carriage is the briefing room, so transit runs concurrently with the previous match and costs zero throughput. AI video generation makes per-realm window footage a solo-founder job now. Sub-$1,500 version proves it in the road-case kit (per-seat $27 shaker pucks, one window, the far-door unlatch). Practicality: the room never moving is a legal strategy, not just a budget one — real motion under guests reclassifies you as an amusement ride.

Lenses on the record — the propaganda engine (2026-08-30)

Every match auto-files an official account written in the winning House's ratified voice (from story/bible/voices/ — the asset already exists) from the structured event log; the true log stays readable in the maintenance archive. AP has auto-written sports recaps from box scores since 2014; an LLM makes them good; and our fiction uniquely absorbs generator weirdness — a stilted recap is canon, the record lies. Two-cut replays (winner's cut vs raw cut) are the same muscle applied to video. Practicality: templates + a cheap LLM pass over data the server already owns. Schema-validate names/scores against the log before publishing; human-review the first hundred.

Five-way scoring topologies (2026-08-30 — Scott's 5-way battle, generalized)

Team count is a variable in the event schema, not a constant — that alone future- proofs 5-way. The deeper version: your House determines your scoreboard, not your gun. Valerii score by holding ground, Axiom by verifying beacons, Syndicate by salvage, Censors by witnessing tags, Salvari by repairs on the hidden ledger. Even a 2-team match becomes asymmetric-objective play no commercial system offers — "why that turn is a crime," physicalized. Practicality: scoring projections over one event stream. The engine's House-passive composability, ported.

The Chronicle — battles become the world (2026-08-30 — Scott's idea, shaped)

Every match files its official account into a public season Chronicle; the spine stays read-only (author-only floor events, per the standing constraint); the record stratum is the sanctioned exception. Venues are nodes filing events upward — a federation protocol, which is a distributed-systems artifact, which is the founder's actual craft. Season arcs get authored from the accumulated filings. "Last week's official record is this week's rule" (parked above) is the local loop of the same system.

The Spire is literally an AI (2026-08-30 — the sentience hint, made true)

The bible hints the Spire might be sentient. The arena makes the marketing line true: an AI runs the arena as a character — reading the event stream, choosing arena events from a sanctioned enum table, speaking PA lines in House voices, filing the propaganda recap. The authority boundary is absolute and load-bearing: the AI narrates and flavors; deterministic hardware adjudicates. It never touches scores, locks, fog density, strobe rates, volume ceilings, or money — limits live in firmware the model can't reach. 95% of speech is a pre-rendered line pool (an entire 5-voice library costs under $50 to render); the 5% live path (name callouts, recap) costs $0.20–0.60 per match and degrades silently to the offline pool on dead venue Wi-Fi. Precedents: a solo dev built Twitch's most-subscribed channel this way; the failure mode (unfiltered live AI speech) is equally documented. Practicality: to an insurer, this is "operator-supervised show control with scripted AI narration," with MUTE and SKIP on a phone. Never say "an AI controls the building."

Broadcast: render the match from the log (2026-08-30 — streaming as first-class)

Don't point cameras at the dark — render the truth. Sony/Beyond Sports rebroadcasts NFL games as live animated worlds from telemetry alone (<0.5s behind); our killcam is the same object: a Unity scene re-simulating the last 10 seconds from the event log, in the game's own art. The Unity client becomes the broadcast renderer — the two products literally share a body. Positioning is zone-presence dots (the ESP32 doorframes we already have), not cm-tracking; UWB-in-haze is a researched trap, and the fiction covers the imprecision — the humble map is true but vague. Rig: $300–500 (OBS + two $90 cams + overlay page) to $2,500 (AI-framing PTZs + auto-director script). Practicality: an unknown venue stream has ~zero live audience. The real products are per-player auto-cut takeaway clips (the retention/word-of-mouth engine), on-site spectator screens, and the booking sizzle reel. Owned soundtrack only — which we have.

The audience plays the Bleed (2026-08-30 — Hunger Games participation, made safe)

Demand is proven (Fishtank: $1.25M in six weeks selling physical triggers on live humans) and the failure is documented (Silent Hill: Ascension, 1.8-star — audiences revolt when money buys the verdict). The envelope that works, which the fiction hands us: the audience never buys buffs for players — the audience plays the Bleed. Paid effects are ~12 pre-scripted, telegraphed, referee-vetoable arena events targeting zones and factions, never named players (minors — hard rule). Payers get spectacle and their name in the maintenance log; payers never win prizes — any audience prize is a separate free-entry sweepstakes (the GDQ two-track structure, verbatim). Rent the rails (Crowd Control / StreamLoots, ~20% cut) — the company that built its own platform for this burned $4.5M and died. Weekend test: Twitch channel points (free = no consideration = no triad) mapped to WLED scenes, under $20. Practicality: lawyer checkpoints before any cash prize touches an audience-influenced match, and before tournament entry fees. 2025's sweepstakes-casino bans made "currency that converts back to value" radioactive — never build one.

The spec document is the league (2026-08-30 — championships from day one)

Laser tag worlds exist (Laserforce, Zone — belts, five countries) and the independent circuit's curse is seven incompatible vendor systems with no comparability. Owning the hardware spec is the moat. The model: publish a versioned field spec (taped grid, node coordinates, lux levels, acceptance self-test written into the signed match log) — paintball's inflatable tournament field, ported; league-signed firmware (free on ESP32) as the tamper-evident seal while the server log stays the only truth; and asynchronous same-seed matches — two venues, 1000 miles apart, replay the identical Spire script and compare logs centrally. Duplicate bridge solved this a century ago; set-seed speedruns normalized it for gamers. No netcode, no inspectors, no dispute engine. EVO started as a 40-person bracket in 1996; the cheap tier is a rulebook, a seed generator, one 40-person open, and a mailed championship belt — under $500. Practicality: laser tag became a $500k-prize esport in 2024 (Games of the Future, phygital format — game + arena hybrid, i.e. exactly our shape). Study the format; avoid the umbrella — it is a Kremlin-backed property with sanctions optics.

The graveyard test — and the loan (2026-08-30 — read before any pitch)

Every corpse in the research file died the same way: capex-heavy, rent-burdened, or expansion-drunk (The VOID, Immersive Fort Tokyo, Two Bit Circus, Lighthouse — profitable in 2021, bankrupt at 20 venues in 2023). Both long-lived successes share one shape: owned world + near-zero fixed footprint (Sleep No More: one venue, 14 years; mobile laser tag operators: no rent, 20–60% margins). The concept passes the graveyard test only in its portable form. The fixed Living Arena building is the version that joins the graveyard. Loan framing that survives a loan officer: $15–40k equipment tier, $600–1,200 per premium private event (above the $300–900 mobile band, justified by narrative; Sandbox proved $45–65/head group pricing at retail), 9–36-month payback, one kit + one metro + proven repeat bookings before a second kit exists. Insurance quote before the pitch. Roughly half of mobile bookings are birthday parties — take the money under a plain service name; keep the EchoSpire brand on the premium events. And the VOID's sharpest lesson cuts both ways for us: owning the IP kills the royalty drain but kills borrowed demand — the game and the arena cannot both be zero-audience at launch; one must feed the other. Which is the actual argument for the road-case kit existing before Kickstarter: real people in violet light on a floor full of echoes is footage no other solo dev can shoot.

The venue session (2026-08-30, evening — Scott + Claude)

Scott's direction: the venue opens in Idaho — a family-heavy, high-LDS trade area. No alcohol (a variety of reasons); dirty sodas instead. Food + arcade + mini golf + laser tag. Ground-up build strongly preferred — the story wants the building. Nightly closing spectacle. Themed portal restrooms. Honest pricing that makes families stay. Evidence for every number: venue-idaho-research.md. Reviewed feasibility workbooks: OneDrive/EchoSpire/Financials - EchoSpire.xlsx (M.I.G. template, 2017 engine, ~$4.1–5.2M revenue / ~24% EBITDA variants) and Cost to Build - EcoSpire.xlsx ($3.34M — construction line is $0; true ground-up is ~$6–9M).

Idaho Falls is the lead candidate (2026-08-30)

CORRECTED same day — Scott's ruling: the venue is Boise-area. The Idaho Falls analysis below stands as data, not as the plan. Strategy deltas for Boise: (1) don't compete with Wahooz on attraction count — win by being different in kind (the IP venue, not the bigger FEC); (2) the west valley (Nampa/Caldwell side, ~$194k/acre) is the in-metro gap candidate; (3) Boise City Code 11-04-011 bans exterior searchlights/lasers — which Scott resolved by ruling the Spire show indoors (see nightly-show correction); (4) the dry model costs more revenue in a metro than in eastern Idaho — the dirty-soda/FHE program has to work harder.
