You said you are not a writer. That is visible. It is also being managed better than most AI-assisted first games, because story/claude.md is a discipline document: interrogation, a rejection log, a cover test, and an anti-tells list. The bible is the product of that process. The running game is not.
Bottom line¶
As a concept, this story is good. Better than the median Kickstarter lore bible. It has a thesis, a protagonist with contradictions, Houses as griefs rather than alignment charts, and a structural trick (the tutorial is propaganda) that a stranger can understand in one sentence.
As shippable content, it is not in the game yet. Phase 1 interrogation is mostly done. Phase 2 drafting has not started. What the client currently shows is a pre-rebuild 15-panel slideshow that explains the true Fall and violates standing rules (Spire described as built; Salvari introduced in the opening; old House names).
The gap between those two sentences is the narrative risk. A Kickstarter that quotes the bible and a demo that plays the slideshow will feel like two writers.
| Grade | |
|---|---|
| Story as concept | A- |
| House voices on the page | B+ |
| Completeness toward a playable campaign | D+ |
| What a player currently sees | D |
| Fitness for Kickstarter if the slice matches the bible | B |
What the story actually is¶
A century ago the Aevum Spire — the machine that anchored one outcome out of infinite echoes — was broken on a routine maintenance window. Four division heads each ran a secret override. None conspired. Each was locally right. The core did not fail; it obeyed four contradictory commands and tore itself apart.
Alden, Head of Maintenance, pulled the emergency cutoff, saved what could be saved, and was written into history as the Saboteur. He expected to die. The core refused the payment. He is unaging, faceless to the player (Wilson rule), and the only person still trying to repair the building. He forged the Salvari as a fake House: public mission disruption, actual function repair. The player is the first person he trusts in a century — not a chosen one, a steadier pair of hands.
Five Houses rule the wreck, each a coping mechanism for the same night:
| House | Coping | The crack |
|---|---|---|
| Valerii | Control as mourning. The wall is a funeral. | Criminal founder’s blood still holds the chair. Valerius IV wears his dead brother’s name. |
| the Axiom | Certainty as terror. Math does not unravel. | Founded on the unprovable claim that the Spire chose Hesper. Their trials are now corrupted and they will not examine that. |
| the Censors | The record outranks the world. | The house of truth was born by destroying a record. |
| the Syndicate | Wealth = power. No second page. | Deliberately thin. A century’s pettiest war over a stolen artifact. |
| Salvari | Spite-and-craft for the crews; repair-as-mourning for Alden alone. | Ideology is a decoy. Membership is a chore list. |
The opening contract: the player plays “The Fall” as the official account. Propaganda is legible. Philosophies are taught as conflicting orders during the crisis. The sim fails on purpose. “Orientation complete. Choose your House.” The rest of the game un-teaches that hour. Salvari are hidden unless the player does not fit.
Campaigns share a skeleton: induction, deepening, conviction test, consequence. Defection once, at Act 3. The floor of that night is reachable only down the Salvari line. The postable moment is designed as the Salvari Act 3 reveal — not “the tutorial lied to you” as a single speech.
That is a real story. It is also, today, a specification.
Quality, said to someone who is not a novelist¶
You do not need to become one. You need to keep being a commissioning editor with a short list of laws, which you already wrote down.
What is working:
- A tragedy of withheld information, not of monsters. Class-blindness caused the catastrophe (nobody forged the maintenance logs because Maintenance was beneath notice) and also preserved the only true record. That knot is authored.
- Alden is a person. He pulled the lever knowing the price. He is not sure it was the only answer. After the Event he cannot act below certainty. He never promises. He talks about machines the way other people talk about people. Face never shown. Hands always busy. That is enough protagonist for a game.
- Voice sheets pass a cover test on the page. Hide the House name:
- Valerii: “Herren held east checkpoint for six hours. You’re standing in the six hours.”
- Axiom: “The district’s removal is indicated. Grief is noted and does not alter the indication.”
- Censors: “Nothing is lost. Say it with me. Nothing is lost; some things are archived beyond retrieval.”
- Syndicate: “The Censors owe us nine decades of interest and a signature. We’re patient people. Interest is patience, priced.”
- Salvari: “Lost Pell on the east run. Bit of a mess. Her kit goes to whoever can lift it.”
- Alden: “It’s a good story. Clean. Fits on a monument.”
- Asymmetry is protected. Mixed birth clocks. Thin Syndicate. Hidden Salvari. Harbormasters erased. Valerius II is deliberately forgettable. That is how you avoid the five-founder spreadsheet.
- Anti-goals are correct. Not a power fantasy. Not grimdark. Not political allegory. Not a truth-dump. Not archaeology-only. The beauty of the intact Spire has to be real or the grief is fake.
What still smells like a writers’ room (and story/claude.md already banned some of this):
- Template sections (“The contradiction that survives”) on every House.
- “Load-bearing” as a tic.
- Not-X-but-Y constructions: “The wall is not their strategy. The wall is their mourning.” The idea is good; the sentence shape is the tell you listed.
- A Dumbledore ruling cited by name in
10-alden.md. Keep the thought; lose the footnote in anything player-facing. - “Every Vulcan gesture is a white-knuckled grip.” Same: keep the white knuckles, drop Star Trek.
- The bible explains its own themes at length. That is fine for designers. The habit will leak into game copy if you draft from the bible instead of from the voice sheets.
The July cold read (SudoWrite) was right on the structural holes, and they are still the holes:
- The player is a blank. Pre-House identity, a concrete want, friction with Alden’s patience — adopted as a Session 5 requirement, not resolved.
- Each campaign still needs a named NPC, a mystery that cracks that House’s official story, and a complicity beat (the player serves the lie before they know it).
- “Why this person, not any crew hand?” is unanswered.
- The conviction test is a vibe, not an action with costs on every path.
Those are not lore nits. A roguelike cannot carry twenty hours of negative space the way a novel can. The avatar needs a want you can play.
Completeness¶
story/story-plan.md is honest. Phase 1 interrogation is largely done (pillars, Alden, Decoupling, Houses, voices). Session 5 (campaign shapes) is in progress: avatar-knot, sorting, four acts, defection rules are ratified; knowledge matrix and per-House turning points are not. Phase 2 drafting is unchecked. There is no story/drafts/tutorials/ and no story/drafts/campaigns/.

Wrong story |
What the player currently sees¶
This is the important part, because Kickstarter will be judged on it.
Canon (00-pillars.md): the player plays the official account. The truth is never shown whole in the opening. It leaks through hairline cracks. Salvari are hidden. The Spire is never described as built. The pillar line is marketing-only.
Shipped (data/content/quest-templates.json, “The Opening”): a 15-panel stills cutscene, realmCount: 0. It is not playable. It tells the true Fall via redacted maintenance logs in the first sitting. Panel 1:
“The light of something that was built.” “This is the centre of everything. Not metaphorically. Literally.”
That is a direct violation of two standing rules, and it is encyclopedia voice. Later panels name the four conflicting commands, show a faceless man on the lever, and introduce all five Houses including Salvari. The player is handed the mystery’s answer as a slideshow, then asked “Which answer is yours?”
The Opening Story screen exists (OpeningStoryView + StorytellerControl). The copy it would tell is this slideshow unless someone replaces the quest template. Plumbing is not content.
Faction tutorials exist as 8-node quests in the same file. They are pre-rebuild tone: Baroness Lux, Arch Logos, “Compliance is not requested. It is assumed.” The Salvari tutorial is closest in texture and still breaks the Wilson rule in outro copy (a weathered man looks at you).
So: the tutorial-is-propaganda idea is a design pillar with zero current content that implements it. The game currently does the thing the rebuild was invented to stop.
Teaser vs bible vs demo¶
Teaser v7 is the right shape: a clean official broadcast that shears mid-word on “tru—”, then a pull-back into a workshop and Alden from behind. The locked line is the right line. Cold viewers already failed to read the first half as propaganda. That is the same failure as the family playtest that killed the original video opening. The fix is not a longer teaser. The fix is a playable hour that is the broadcast, then the workshop.
House names: teaser and bible use Axiom / Syndicate / Censors. Code, crests, card folders, and live faction rows still say Syntacta / Aethari / Annalis. This is propagation debt, already settled on 2026-07-03. It is Kickstarter-blocking if trailer and demo disagree. It is not an open naming question. Display-layer mapping is the cheap fix; identifier rename is correctly deferred.
The graphic novel under docs/GraphicNovel/ is art direction, not canon. The 2026-08-27 evaluation already said: Alden’s face on the cover violates the Wilson rule; narration boxes dump the premise. Use the plates. Do not print the captions as a stretch reward until they are rewritten against the bible.
How to use AI without sounding like AI¶
You already wrote the rules. Follow them as if they were code review.
- Draft from voice sheets, not from the pillar essays. The essays teach you. The sheets teach the character.
- One named person per House before any cosmology paragraph.
- If a sentence would survive in a well-reviewed novel, keep it. If it would survive in a wiki, it belongs in a designer doc, not on screen.
- The orientation sim is allowed to sound like propaganda — confident, complete, well-produced. That is the tell. Player-facing Salvari and Alden must sound like fittings and jobs.
- Never resolve a mystery because a draft created a hole. The floor exists; no one recites it.
- Do not write the playable-lie opening as a cutscene of the truth with a Skip button. Skip will win, and then the whole trick is gone.
You do not need to author twenty hours of prose before Kickstarter. You need:
- One orientation quest that is the official account, with three or four conflicting-order choices.
- One House induction in that House’s voice (mechanics + membership, not a lecture).
- Flavor on cards and events that passes the cover test.
- Alden, from behind, once, saying the locked line or something as short.
That is a story demo. The bible will carry the rest when Phase 2 actually starts.
Honest recommendation (story only)¶
Do not expand the cosmology. Do not write five campaign novels. Do not relitigate House names, Alden vs Kaelen, or House vs faction.
Write the playable lie, in production copy, against the voice of the sim (official, fluent, certain) and the cracks (a log that should not exist, a flicker of the wrong corridor). Replace the 15-panel truth dump. Hide Salvari on the select screen. Map display names. Then stop talking about story until a stranger has played that hour.
The concept can survive a first-time writer. The current opening cannot.
